Death by Effexor? - "Talk To Your Doctor"

I'm not surprised to see another pharmaceutical company rolling out the worn phrase, "Talk to your doctor." This time it's Pfizer covering themselves by using the classic buck-passing trend that attempts to bury the truth.

Amery and Christiane Schultz from BC, Canada are generating media interest with regard to the way their son, Matthew, died just two hours after being born. The Schultz family firmly believe his death was a result of Christiane taking Effexor during her pregnancy.

Health Canada, the Canadian medicines regulator, warned doctors in 2004 that SSRi/SNRi type drugs, such as Effexor, and cited "adverse effects" during the third trimester of pregnancy. The Schultz family were unaware of this warning, they, like millions of other Canadians don't tend to read the Health Canada webpage. Neither, it seems, did their doctor. When confronted with this information the Schultz family doctor told them, "I've never seen these before, I prescribe these drugs to women all the time and I've never seen these before."

Pfizer's response, ironically, is: "...Patients should be advised to notify their physician if they become pregnant or intend to become pregnant during pregnancy."

It's hardly comforting is it?

A few weeks ago Amery wrote to the BC Premier, a letter that appears on his blog HERE. Despite what the reporter says in Video 2, Amery and Christiane have still not received a reply from BC Premier, Christy Clark.

Amery and Christiane are now spreading the word via the media in Canada.
